5 Steps How to Groom a Siberian Husky

If you have a pet like a Siberian Husky, you would not be surprised if find yourself being in a dilemma several times a year. As a matter of fact, a Siberian Husky typically sheds its furry coat twice in a year.

Also called as “blowing” the coat, this manner of shedding their undercoat usually happens during spring when the weather is warm and humid, and during autumn when they shed off to allow a new coat to grow as the weather starts to become cold.

But why is a thick undercoat essential for a Siberian Husky?

The coat of the Husky serves as an insulator, keeping him warm during winter and cool during summer. Furthermore, the fur prevents the Siberian Husky from gaining skin diseases including allergies and sunburn. Their thick coat also precludes the Husky from being susceptible to bugs and parasites.

Since a Siberian Husky’s coat is significant to maintain his wellness, removing it entirely is not the solution to his seemingly endless shedding. As pet owners, it is essential to understand that there are a lot of things you can do to keep your dog in top shape while making sure that you do not end up with a lot of furs scattered in your living room. This is when grooming comes in.

Grooming involves a lot of tools in order to ensure that your Siberian Husky is in top condition. There are a lot of combs meant for your pet. You can also use different kinds of brush for Husky.

Once you are done choosing the best brush for your Siberian Husky, you may start grooming your pet. Here are five steps on how to groom a Siberian Husky.

1.Invest in other grooming tools for your Husky.

There are several kinds of brush which you can use to groom your pet. Primarily, you can avail yourself of a pin brush which allows you to remove your dog’s dead undercoat by rubbing lightly along its body. A sucker brush is also an effective kind of brush which removes the undercoat and flyaway fur.

Once you have chosen a brush for your dog, it is also high time to invest in other tools for grooming your Siberian Husky. Here is a quick list of the things you need to have with you.

One of the must-have grooming tools is an undercoat rake. An undercoat rake is a handheld rake with elongated teeth set relatively far apart. The undercoat rake is designed to remove the loose undercoat hairs of your Husky. When using the undercoat rake, be sure to begin from the top and gently rake your way down. Use the tool lightly because it is equipped with blades.

Another grooming tool is a Furminator. A unique grooming tool, the Furminator makes your grooming time more efficient while keeping your furry pet clean. To use the tool, gently brush it against the coat of your dog. When choosing a Furminator, be sure to get the tool meant for a long coated husky. A Furminator meant for short coats will only damage your husky’s furry coat.

You also have to invest in a high-quality vacuum. Though expensive and quite bulky, the vacuum can also save you much time since this helps you clean your husky after grooming him. Furthermore, you can use the vacuum to clean up the excess fur that has fallen to the ground.

2.Brush gently all the parts of your Husky’s body where the thick undercoat accumulates.

Be gentle when brushing the coat of your dog. You do not want to injure him, since several of the brush may be a little bit sharp. It is recommended to start from the head of your husky. Slowly brush your way to the tail. Then, you begin combing each side of your husky, working your way down to his feet.

Use different tools on different parts of your husky’s body. Various devices have different functions. While some of these tools remove loose hair in the undercoat, others reach up until their skin. Be mindful not to pull any tangles as it might hurt your pet. As much as possible, you should brush your dog’s fur in one direction only.

3.Never shave your Husky’s fur.

It is improper to trim or shave the fur of your Siberian Husky. Cutting your pet’s coat will only make him develop a coat damage. This is risky for the coat which keeps your dog protected from dirt and UV rays. Such action will just make him more susceptible to skin problems. It is also possible that the undercoat and the topcoat will grow back in patches, forming an uneven fur.

It is, however, recommended to trim the hair that grows on the hairy pads under your husky’s feet. This may be due to the fact that the hair is not visually appealing, considering your dog’s regal appearance. Using a pair of scissors, carefully cut the hair on the pads on his feet. Your Siberian Husky will surely look more appealing without that hair.

4.Always remember to bathe your Siberian Husky.

While it is essential to bathe your Husky to maintain his neat appearance, he does not need to be bathed all the time. It is because a husky does not have an oily coat which is associated with the typical dog smell. This means that huskies can be bathed at most twice a year. Frequent bathing can only deter the presence of natural oils on your husky’s skin, causing skin problems. Always use a shampoo and conditioner meant for dogs. Due to its thick coat, you may want to rinse your husky many times to remove any remaining shampoo. If you are unsure of the proper way to bathe your dog, you may want to take him to a grooming shop.

5.Don’t forget the other parts of your dog.

Aside from its coat, you should also groom other parts of your Siberian Husky to make him a lot more appealing. You may clean the inner portion of your husky’s ear using a soaked cotton ball. This keeps your dog away from ear mites. Furthermore, you can clip your dog’s toenails, especially when these have become longer. Do not cut your husky’s whiskers since the whiskers aid your dog to sense motion. Also, it is also recommended to inspect your dog’s coat for possible fleas.

As pet owners, keeping your Siberian Husky in top condition takes a considerable time and effort. However, everything will be worth it once you witness the stunning transformation your dog will become. Aside from being physically appealing, you are ensured of his health and well-being.
